Brent Popes tips for looking your best
Brent Pope is a former professional sportsman, author, charity worker and television celebrity. As one of Irelands best dressed men, Brent has his own successful brand of shirts and shoes aptly maned POPE. He is always asked by woman to have a word with there husband and give him some tips on looking smarter. So, guys stop being hassled and fight back with my first 5 tips on dressing to impress better. Remember look good, and you feel good.
1 Tuck it in mister
If you purchase a modern styled shirt and intend wearing a blazer or suit with it, then please always tuck it in. If it is longer more casual fitted style then by all means wear it untucked for a more trendy, modern look that can help disguise the belly, but not with a blazer or a suit it looks scruffy. Keep most of the buttons done up, a little bit of bronzed chest is acceptable for a casual look but don’t be one of those who undo the buttons to the waist at a certain age. What are you thinking?
2 The Italian connection
Make sure always you opt for a more tailored look in whatever you purchase. Look for a shirt that looks pretty good on you for starters, i.e. the colour looks good, you like the style etc and then have it tailored to fit perfectly afterwards. If your worried about having enough for a tailor to work with hold the garment to the light and check if you have enough seam to work with, the rest a tailor can do. We all admire Italian styling, but it has more to do with their tailored look than spending huge amounts. There are plenty of local tailors’ who will trim a bit off here and there, and find an extra inch or so so that you look good where the clothes fit your shape. Don’t throw out your favourite mohair long coat, get it shortened, taken in and brought up to date. Long wool coats were mostly invented for bouncers to wear over their suits, nowadays why not wear them with a shirt or turtle neck jumper and have the excess material taken off and reshaped. If they have shoulder pads them, I’m afraid they got to go, I’m sorry but the Miami Vice fashion is not coming back soon.
3 Good Shoes
My father always told me to have good shoes, they don’t have to be new but at least have decent laces and always have them polished. Styles are forever changing, and ankle boots are making a comeback if you’re a little bit older the Chelsea style or suede boots can work but unless your rocking the biker look with the open faded boots or the cowboy boots then pull back your ambition, only the chosen few look good in these. For men over 40, good pair of round toed brogues are a must.
Shoes and finger nails are among the first thing a woman looks at on a first date, oh that and if you six pack. (under your shirt and not in your hands) The trend in footwear is now to go with the latest fashion trends and look for colours. Always shoe up age appropriate, and to me that means slip on and fluorescent runners for the older man carry a serious risk warning. Black shoes are good for formal occasions, but get some colour in your life. The square toe is like the flat top haircut... it’s OUT!
4 Colour me pink
Don’t be vanilla all your life, so dress up your look with some sharp accessories. A tie, some nice detail on your shirts collar (the new tie), cuff links, scarves, pocket squares or tie pins can make even the blandest man stick out from the crowd. Don’t be afraid to mix stripes with squares or dots, there is no normal. Go on add a dash of colour and start living, step out of your comfort zone and dare to make an impression.
5 Belt Up
Ditch the old belts. An old weathered belt may look good on some rugged, outback male models with a white T shirt and ripped jeans, but only on rare occasions. So, invest in a good quality leather belt when you are on holiday and in the markets, and look for either dark brown or black, not those stretchy ones that never look good or a no no for a certain age a white one. It looks off-putting when you are all dressed up and ready to go, and then all eyes are drawn to your miscoloured and weary old belt. When the holes get worn or stretched through repeated fluctuating weight it’s time to ditch out.
